I just had to reset FF to default, and it forgot my sync information. No problem, I'll just re-enter it.

Of course I went to Tools->Options->Sync. Then things got weird.

So I tried "Set up Firefox Sync" and it opened another window. Fine, but then the button "I have an account" doesn't do anything. Click click click click click, nothing happens, it's without functionality.

Then, in Pair a Device, which is how I'd normally do it, the link at the bottom of the window "I don't have the device with me" (which is poorly worded in my opinion) is just plain missing. It's not there. Gone. If you'd like, I can make you a screen shot.

So, I don't know what to do now. I just want to sync.

You're welcome.

If it happens again then you can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Note that deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

What kind of problems did you have that you decided to reset Firefox?

When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop (Old Firefox Data). You will lose extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you've made.

It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Oh, it was about FF only remembering some of my open tabs and windows when I restarted, but not all of them.

That part is of course fixed now. I quickly was able to reinstall all my add-ons and scripts, and that part is all good now.

It's really just the sync that is not working as expected.

Yay, it worked. Starting up in safe mode, the "I have an account" button finally worked, and I was able to complete everything as expected after that.

Odd though...

Yes, thank you much.

It looks like I was wrong. Resetting FF did not solve the problem of restarting and FF only remembering some of the open tabs and windows, but not all.

Doh!

Are there any of the missing tabs and windows visible in History > Recently Closed Tabs/Windows ?

If there are problems then best is to select this startup setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

No, they do not show in History > Recently Closed Tabs/Windows.

Doh! Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is obvious. It was not selected. I must have missed changing it after the reset.

thanks
