Firefox disabled all Add-ons. Attempting to download replacement Add-ons returns "Download failed. Please check your connection." error message.

more options

On 5/3/19 Firefox suddenly alerted me that it disabled all of my Add-ons stating that "These extensions do not meet current Firefox standards so they have been deactivated."

Immediately below this message, Firefox gives me the option to "Find a Replacement" Add-on.

After going through this process and locating the replacement Add-on, all attempts to download this (or any other Add-on) produce an error message stating "Download failed. Please check your connection."

However, my internet connection is working just fine.

I am running the latest version of Firefox (66.0.3 (64-bit)). And I have tried downloading the Add-on with my anti-virus temporarily disabled (with no success).

Screen captures are attached.

Does anyone know what is causing this issue and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Mozilla has rolled-out a fix for this. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours, you don’t need to take active steps.

In order to be able to provide this fix on short notice, they are using the Studies system. You can check if you have studies enabled

  1. Go to [=] > Options > Privacy & Security.
  2. Make sure Allow Firefox to install and run studies is check marked.

I you had it disabled, you can disable studies again after your add-ons have been re-enabled.

They are working on a general fix that doesn't need to rely on this and will keep you updated.

I'm having this exact problem on two computers...I was reading a page, then suddenly I had a little yellow bar pop up telling me some of my extensions are no longer verified. Turns out it's all of my extensions. In addition, ALL of my unpinned tabs have disappeared, along with my customizations. I'm not happy at all right now. >:(

I don't think forum volunteers yet know the cause or remedy for this problem. However, know that dozens of people are reporting the same thing in recent hours, so it may be due to a rolling update gone wrong.

I am having the same problem

While I have not had firefox disable any of my add-ons, I am having the problem where no add-ons can be updated or installed.

Exact same issue here-- I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've gone as far as to use a VPN and I still encounter the issue.

Seems like the servers are having a problem-- either that or an update bungled everything up. What's strange is that my primary session isn't affected-- it's additional sessions/profiles I run simultaneously.

Are you noticing the problem on your default profile-- or is it only impacting the others?

FWIW, I've run into this problem tonight but a friend hasn't.

A friend is running the same version as I am, 64 bit Firefox, v66.0.3 and right at this moment, I've having the problem but all of his add-ons and extensions are working.

So the bug might not be affecting all Firefox users. Why some have the problem and others aren't is another mystery about this bug.

The Add-ons team is working on a fix for this. It looks like a certificate used to sign many popular extensions expired. (The verification process checks that certificate.)

I don't know how soon re-signed versions of those extensions will become available, or whether another workaround will be discovered. We are all hoping to learn more soon.

Possibly it is related to when your Firefox does its daily extension updates check? Unfortunately, it's too late for people already affected by this issue to "un-update".

nerdynanny,

Thank you for the feedback. To answer your questions:

I've never created any additional profiles in Firefox, so I've only been using the default.

I also typically only run one session of Firefox at a time, so I have not performed any trouble-shooting with multiple sessions active.

Seems like this issue is very widespread. I'm hoping the clever developers at Mozilla are all over it like a second date...

I didn't know Firefox did a daily extension updates check. How is that disabled?

I can tell my friend before it's too late.

All extensions disabled.

Someone needs to learn a little bit about software testing and version control.

If the rolling update caused this, THERE SHOULD BE A MECHANISM TO FALL BACK. Fall back immediately.

I don't know whether that triggers it.

Thanks. I've sent a message to my friend. If he can make that about:config change before the bug hits him, whatever happens to Firefox on his machine will yield some useful information.

Edit:

There are millions of FF users, but this support forum hasn't been flooded with posts. That might indicate the problem is relatively small in scope, affecting only a small percentage of users.

OTOH, maybe most people don't know how to get to this section on Mozilla.org. I looked for the support forum and a "register" button and couldn't find either. I had to pretend post a question before the registration option appeared. It was annoying.

OTOOH, maybe Mozilla wants to make it hard for people to post problems to filter out useless posts.

Edit 2:

FWIW, my friend didn't get my message about your suggested about:config workaround until after midnight EDT and now all his add-ons have been disabled.

Edit 3:

My friend switched to Chrome, at least temporarily. I've done the same.

I was surprised that all the add-ons that I used in FF are available on Chrome for free. I didn't know that until now.

This is totally INSANE....I've wasted over an hour deleting FF, re-installing FF, clearing the registry and even restoring Windows. But this stupid Firefox error message implies the problem is on my end....this is so not cool. There is a remedy however....It's called Chrome. Seriously, Chrome has 65% of the browser market share whereas Firefox has fallen to 9%. And their mobile browser share is even more dismal at 1%. Even registering for this community support forum is needlessly cumbersome.

I didn't find those links, other users posted them in replies to similar questions about this bug.

This is a serious problem and Mozilla is famously unresponsive. I guess it is finally time to say goodbye to this crippled browser and move on to one where there is actual support and these kinds of stupid mistakes don't happen. I've wasted too much time over the years to remain a fan of this sad company.

Official updates for this problem are expected to be posted here:

https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/certificate-issue-causing-add-ons-to-be-disabled-or-fail-to-install/39047

Currently, the only workaround is to set your system clock back (for example, if your date is May 3, set to May 2; if your date is May 4, set to May 3). You might have to reinstall extensions after that, or maybe Firefox will detect the difference at your next shut down/restart. Changing the date may have other consequences, so this option isn't ideal.

How are you thinking Mozilla is not aware and not working on this?

They are very aware and working on it. Were you expecting them to somehow contact you directly?

The basic issue is an intermediate certificate that is being used by many authors to sign extensions has expired.

Nothing to do with any version of Firefox web browser.

Having the same problem. Can't download themes or u-Block origins after Firefox removed them without warning. Can't find the deleted themes; can't download any new ones. Can't download any other ad blocker ... or anything for that matter.

Will trust you guys are diligently working on this, as always.

This is not the first such issue with Firefox and getting information out of them is like trying to get water out of rocks. I had to hunt everything down. And, yes, they should get in touch as soon as they know there is a problem, and they don't. How should I know they are working on it? How should I even know I am not the only person affected? I am not telepathic. But if they want support and donations, they have to communicate and not let their users flounder and spend time trying to fix something that the users cannot fix.

Same issue here.

Just received a yellow bar message and one of my addons auto disabled with no option to enable even though I have literally every single update option in "about:config" set to false. When trying to re-install i'm receiving a red error messaging stating the download failed and to check my connection...

This is absolutely ridiculous.
