Terrible and chronic lag in Firefox 13
Ever since the update to Firefox 13, I have been experiencing the worst lag I've ever known on a modern computer. There is lag when I'm typing, such as now as I type this (I just wrote that last sentence with nothing happening, only for it to show up in the text box a few seconds later). There is lag with the loading of web pages, with the changing of the cursor icon as you hover over a link, with videos, with everything.
When I first open Firefox, it runs perfectly for all of about 5 minutes. I don't have to do anything, the lag will start to occur. In small intervals at first, but with increasing frequency and longer pauses as time goes on. I can't have Firefox open for more than 20 minutes before I'm driven crazy by the lag and I have to restart it.
Presently, Firefox is completely unusable. I cannot understand why this update was released. I was not experiencing any of these problems with lag prior to the update to Firefox 13, which I allowed because updates are generally supposed to be improvements, right?
I tried doing a clean uninstall, removing all files and folders associated with Firefox, doing a registry clean to remove all straggling registry keys left behind by the uninstall, then reinstalling Firefox 13. I thought for sure the problem would go away at this point because this is an absolutely clean install, right? No plugins, no nothing. Just Firefox. But, no. The lag continues, and it's making me crazy.
I'll use Google Chrome or some such for now. But I would like to one day be able to return to Firefox, since it is the only browser ever created that I actually like.

I uninstalled Firefox 13 and found the installer for Firefox 12 and installed it. Right now I have 150 tabs open in three windows, I've watched stuff on YouTube, and I've done dozens of other things--and there is no lag.
So the problem is definitely in Firefox 13 itself. Firefox 12 is performing wonderfully. First thing I did was disable the automatic updates so I don't end up with 13 again.

Dear Firefox,
I have been a Firefox user for 6 years. I was very pleased with 3.6 for most of those years.5 years 11 months and 3 weeks. Until I upgraded to release 12 and then Firefox automatically upgraded me to 13. After repeated attempts to rectify the several problems with no support from firefox, I am using Google Chrome as of yesterday..... because Mozilla is not standing behind (supporting) their products. When you guys figure out what you're doing and why...let me know!

I'm still happily using Firefox 12 that I've downgraded to. Just be sure to disable automatic updates under the Update tab in the Options dialog once you reinstall Firefox 12. Be sure to uninstall Firefox 13 first. Turns out you can keep your settings upon uninstalling 13. Went through this on another system and tried it. Firefox 12 worked fine once it was reinstated. You can find Firefox 12 here:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/12.0/
Just follow your system type (first click) and language (second click) to find the installer (third click).
Ever since around version 13-13.1 Ive been having lag issues. FF lags then freezes to the point I have to force close it I wish I could go back to v12 but all I have is v11 please fix this Mozilla ASAP! I mean there is no reason this should be a on going issue I understand every browser is going to have issues from time to time weather it's Chrome,Opera or so on I know your probably looking into it right now so please fix this soon as possible thanks.
This article should help:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding
I did get a message from Firefox a few weeks ago about some script it was blocking or wasn't responding I chose to block it instead of allowing it to run I think that might have been one of my extensions that was blocked. Do you think I should restore my settings to an earlier state before this happened?
I used Firefox 3.6 for years and loved it. Best browser ever. Recommended it to everyone I knew. Finally I took the plunge and went to Firefox 10. Took a bit of getting used to but everything worked well. I've always disabled the updates but had to re-install Windows 7 after a problem and ended up with Firefox 13. Nothing but problems. I could cope with no Google Toolbar on Firefox 10 but I really can't cope with juddering video playback, severe lag in other areas, no Real Player Downloader amongst other things. I can't even play games on Facebook anymore due to crappy video playback. And its pretty slow. Just as an experiment I installed Firefox 3.6 and voila - works like a dream. Not going to stay with it obviously but I also think I'm not going to stay with Firefox full stop. Pity. The best browser is now probably the worst. Any recommendations other than IE?
Firefox 13 should not be lagging or hanging, it works ok for me on Windows and Ubuntu.
BUT Firefox 13 may have current known issues with FlashPlayer 11.3 and possibly with RealPlayer.
If you have a problem you are best starting your own thread, quite possibly all of you have different problems. Use this link
- /questions/new and follow the prompts and links from that
@banditsk4; I have exactly the same problems as you. I was told 3.6 was not supported any longer by Firefox, which was the only reason to upgrade to 12 which seemed OK til I was automatically forced to 13.0. Then within 20 minurtes, the errors began. I thought it must be my IP (comcast) I got into a major altercation with top management with them. Then after a week of frustration as videos are a major consideration with my blog, I googled the firefox 13.0 problems and viola, I found the problem. I was unable to get any support immediately with Mozilla/Firefox, and Comcast said try Chrome. Out of frustration and a lack of support from Firefox, I did and my problems are no longer. Too bad I had to sever a 6 year relationship with I thought a good partner.
horrible performance from this version (13.0.1), can't even click on a yahoo email without the browser freezing up or doing nothing. Was this version even tested before making a release?
EVERYONE please remember it is best to start your own question if you are expecting a solution, rather than just wishing to comment
(and this is the wrong place for such comments, use feedback button, or from a current Firefox version http://input.mozilla.org/en-US/feedback )
@ caseypons
" I was unable to get any support immediately with Mozilla/Firefox, "
You did not try posting your own question that would probably have
- alerted you to existing KB articles
- provided a specific answer to your own specific problems (We are currently answering 90-100% questions within 72 hours)
TO ASK A QUESTION of your own use the link
- /questions/new and follow the links and prompts that you get
Video Problems
There are known problems on Firefox Windows using Flash 11.3 and sometimes if Real Player software is installed. I will not link to all articles but see
- Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again note it links other articles. The advice to downgrade Flash may solve other video problems at the moment
Updates and preventing updates
Sorry but Flash 3.6 is no longer secure. The automated updates go first to Firefox 12, and then offer to update to the current version see
- firefox just updated - why is it asking me to update again?
- firefox 3.6 is no longer supported
- and this thread, where I and others mention how to prevent the auto updating

@John99, I use firefox as a business tool, not to play games. I had nearly severed my 30 year business relationship with Comcast over being unable to function (dead in the water) in my business. Not just a slight inconvenience, for well over a week. I had spent hours, days on the phone, and payed for service calls to my place of business, that were not comcasts problems. When I decided to Google "Firefox 13.0 Problems" about rectifying the issues I had been having for a week. I tried with Comcast in a joint call to follow the instructions left by Firefox to rectify the problem, I nor Comcast could make sense of them Immediately was my time frame I had to work with after a week of trouble shooting.at wits end. So, if you want to tell me, (Immediately) is 72 hours in your book of acceptable responses, then you and I are living in completely different working environments. And don't insult me because you are looking at life through your own time constraints, and you have no idea about mine, do you. Or the countless hours and hundreds of dollars in service calls. This product should have never been released, and when the (complete) failure notices were coming in as they were, Firefox should have pulled this product release and notified all users. I am sorry you fail to see your users point of view. Isn't that the reason the Firefox line of products are out here. Thank you for your time.
PS I did post my own question on Friday and followed it up with a comment on Saturday that I (and Comcast support people) were unable to decifer and apply the work around described on these pages, at $100.00 per HOUR, for Comcast's time. I didn't have 72 hours John.
PS After all this, and well over 7 days (not 72 hours) I still have a dysfunctional Firefox Web Browser. And to that I am very sorry, John!

[Trying to keep this thread focused on helping the person who asked the original question] :)
wornways, have you tried the solutions in the article I linked to? It looks like other people have hijacked this thread, and I haven't seen you reply since I posted.
@everyone else;
I get the feeling that you think the people helping here are developers or Mozilla employees. We're not. The people that answer questions here are users just like you, volunteering their time.
There are people that gather statistics on the most common issues in the support forums as well as feedback submitted using the 'Submit Feedback' item in the Help menu. So far, based on that data, lag has not been a common issue. It isn't an issue on my machine either. So let's figure out what details are different, and maybe we'll find out the specific circumstances that cause a log for some users.
In this case, your setup is probably different than wornways' setup, so the solutions offered to him may not apply to you. That's why it's best to start your own thread via https://support.mozilla.org/questions/new , where volunteers can get more details about your setup. caseypons, once you do that, you can send me a private message with the URL, and I'll make sure to help you out. Heck, if you lived in Toronto, Ontario, I'd be willing to help you out in person. :)
Everyone
Besides using the feedback button one other thing you may do is ensure telemetry is enabled, that helps gather data anonymously, which is then made available to developers
@caseypons
Sorry you continue to have problems.
PS I did post my own question on Friday and followed it up with a comment on Saturday
No you misunderstood and commented in someone else's thread.
You are posting in a public forum support thread started by someone else. A thread containing mainly generalised grumbles about Firefox.
- direct link https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/930184
- you need to use /questions/new
As said repeatedly, please start your own thread, and when you do so please follow the instructions that you will see asking you to paste troubleshooting information into the question. You are probably unlikely to find a solution in this thread.
Also as you mention it is a business I wonder if you have your own intranet ?
That would be useful information to add. (ESR?)
Note. If you mention in this thread when you have posted a question, anyone watching this thread will be able to look for your question if they wish.
Many thanks for all the suggestions and answers given by everyone!
This is a first experience for me dealing with Firefox. As referenced I have never had problems before, so this is all new to me, and frankly very confusing. I just went to the questions section you advised and left my question. So, we'll see what happens. So, thanks for all your help.
