PROBABLY FOLLOWING AN UPDATE, thunderbird no longer loads my mails (which I can only read in web mail), also 2 important folders and their contents have been deleted: Archive and Sent Mail. How can I restore thunderbird functionality and recover the 2 lost folders?

your own local folders are inside the TB-"profile" folder > Mail > Local Folders > ...

disable AV/FW/SS software's "mail-protection" option. if your AV/FW/SS has sub-option to add "EXCEPTION" then "mail-protection" disable not necessary, just add your IMAP/POP3 & SMTP mial-servers inside the EXCEPTION LIST. make sure your AV/SS software has this option enabled: Scan files on access. more info on AV/FW/SS is here.
