What do you mean that they are open?

If you download files then they would be saved unless you have set an automatic action to open such a file in a specific application. I don't know what application this would be n Mac.

If you can't find an action for ZIP files in Firefox > Preferences > Applications then you can rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

Thank You cor-el for the reply i am very new to firefox.. i have been using safari for years. in safari's preference pane i unticked the box that said "open safe files after downloading". I did not get a prompt or a dialog box from firefox whether to open or save the zip file, it just opened. Again, thanks for your advice..

Preferences settings in Safari aren't going to influence what Firefox does with file downloads. Did you read the support pages that cor-el hyperkinked?

As a new user of Firefox, why did you select the Aurora channel version, which is an Alpha-2 level development version? Slightly more stable than Nightly, but less stable than Beta which is less stable that a Release version.

You can get the Release version of Firefox here:

Very sorry for the the misunderstanding, i know that safari has no influence what firefox does. I was stating how easy it was in safari to disable a zip file from opening after being downloaded . i did follow cor-el's advice on that matter. I have been looking for alternate web browser, i like firefox and will download the release version. Thank You for the support
