I subscribe to several forums with Thunderbird RSS, and it works great.

I would like to set up Thunderbird to save a local copy of each RSS message, just like you can do for IMAP email, to read offline, or to be able to read the message even if the original gets deleted on the (forum) web site.

As I understand it, the RSS message contains only a <link> to the website, rather than the contents of the article or post itself. So you could save the RSS messages in a local folder, but if you are offline, there is no access to the site containing the item. As far as being deleted from the forum, you would need to capture the content before that happens...
