Although I have "open new windows in a tab instead" checked off, periodically the windows collapse into one tab on the task bar.
How do I stop this from happening?

Please explain what you were doing and how. Also include the web links.
It happens by itself. The pages are in seperate tabs, I go to sleep, I wake up, the tabs are all in one tab. It doesn't happen with any particular websites.
Are you talking about the Windows Task Bar?
There is a setting that reduces used space on the bar by placing the same program tabs into the same tab.
Yes. How do I change the setting? I have Windows XP
I have Win 7. I don't know if you have the same menus. Right click on the task bat, and select Properties
I have Windows XP. The only thing I could see in properties that might solve the problem was to uncheck "group similar buttons". I recently got a used computer that came with Windows XP. With my old computer which also had Windows XP the tabs simply got smaller as you opened more windows.
Turn off group similar buttons
That helped for a few weeks, but now its back to happening again.
Check group similar buttons again.
That is still unchecked
I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.
