I exported my addresses from Google into a .csv file, then tried to import that file into ThunderBird. Every time, I get "An error occured importing addresses from Text file (LDIF, .tab, .csv, .txt" I have tried exporting a temp file from Thunderbird, then copying and pasteing data into it from my downloaded .csv, but that does not work either.

Thank you, but that only got a part of my files. I found a work around. I imported my Google contacts into MS Office Contacts, then imported them from MS Office Contacts to ThunderBird.

I understand it's important for the CSV file to be saved using UTF-8 encoding. Those produced by Excel are encoded to ANSI standards. You can rescue one by opening it in Notepad and using Save As.

Having said that, I'm not sure what happens if we try to import an ANSI-encoded file. I need to go have a play.
