There are two protocols currently used to collect email from a server; POP3 and IMAP4. They are not interchangeable and they work in quite different ways. When you set up the account one of these two protocols was selected (either by you, or by Thunderbird).

This message says that Thunderbird expects to be talking to an IMAP server and the server replied by saying it isn't an IMAP server, or it replied in such a way as to lead Thunderbird to infer it isn't an IMAP server.

A change between POP and IMAP is a somewhat drastic change and it seems highly unlikely that Thunderbird has silently swapped between protocols. So, unless you have been adding, deleting or otherwise adjusting accounts in Thunderbird, it seems most likely to be an issue at the email provider's end. I suggest you copy this error message to them and ask them to check if their IMAP server is operating correctly.
