"The page isn't redirecting properly" - unless https, or via wireless

I have W8.1 and Firefox 45.0.2 on an HP desktop. And a choice of ethernet + powerline-adaptor connection to the router (preferred), or wireless connection (less reliable).

Suddenly, on return from holiday and switching back on, I find that many webpages (I think all non-https ones) display instead the message: "The page isn't redirecting properly -- Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

That's with the ethernet connection -- reverting to wireless removes the problem! And I think all https pages are displayed OK anyway. The problem seems to be similar in IE, except that the message is simply "This page cannot be displayed".

It happens whether I go to the pages via a link or a bookmark (or typing in). However, refreshing them (if they are already on-screen from previously) seems to work OK when going to them anew would not have done.

I have tried restarting/resetting/refreshing everything, also clearing cache & cookies.

Any suggestions gratefully received...

Hello PeterSoul, try to delete the cookies.sqlite file (is inside the firefox profile folder), you can rename it also (the cookies.sqlite to cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-shm or cookies.sqlite-wal in firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

thank you

What security software do you have?

Did you make sue that your security software isn't blocking cookies?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

Sorry for delay in responding. Here is the unexpected answer to my problem: my neighbour also has powerline connectors and (while we were away) he either installed them or reset them. Because he & I had both left their own Network Name set to default, they then all linked together -- with the result that afterwards (while my neighbour was away) my Technicolor router was feeding my browser traffic back into his BT router (rather than out to my ISP). And that was blocking my access to some internet sites, while letting me through to others. The evidence for this is (a) my ISP was registering minimal traffic from me, (b) I was sometimes being faced with a BT Homehub signup page, (c) when I gave my powerline adaptors a new Network Name, the problem cleared, and (d) when I could finally log on to my router, it showed the names of all my neighbour's devices (from when they had been linked to it in a single network)! So it wasn't an actual browser problem after all - but thank you for the suggestions,
