How do I save format settings in Thunderbird?

more options

I don't want a carriage return to create a double space; I just want a single space. If I click Format, then Paragraph, and change from 'paragraph' to 'body text', I can avoid the double space - but only in the message I'm working on. What can I do to always get minimal formatting (as in body text).

Thank you for the suggestion, buyt when I go to options, composition is not on the list. So I'm stuck.
