How do I prevent Thunderbird from pulling in hundreds of emails that I had previously deleted in my gmail account?

I have Tbird set up so it does NOT sync fully with Gmail. Instead, it only pulls in gmail messages when I click "Get messages." And those messages don't get deleted from gmail until I actually do so in gmail. However, even when I have, say, 3 undeleted emails in gmail, Tbird pulls in hundreds of emails that I had previously deleted in gmail. How can I set Tbird to GET only emails that I have not deleted from gmail? Thanks for helping.
