Mail disappears when using local storage for inbox of multiple emails addresses

After setting up all of my email accounts and also setting local storage folders to store the emails in I went into each account and on server settings, advanced and selected to send all incoming mail to the local storage inbox.

When I do this I see the messages being downloaded and then they vanish.

I go back and set the accounts to use their own inbox and I get the messages fine.

It's only when I want all accounts to send the messages to the local storage inbox that they vanish.

I've missed about half a dozen emails and I have no idea who they are from so I can't very well ask them to resend them.

For the time being I've set it back to individual accounts, but I'd prefer to have the central inbox if I can

What am I doing wrong?

Chosen solution

Well, I worked around it. I have all the accounts going to their own inbox and 1 rule in each account - which moves ALL mail for each account to the inbox of the local account which then has all the individual rules to move to sub folders.

Not elegant, but it works.

AS I understand it, you have several pop mail accounts which you would like to be set up as deferred accounts where all emails from all pop mail accounts will use the 'Local Folders' Inbox.

In this situation, you do not see any pop mail accounts in the left Folder Pane, only 'Local Folders' mail account.

Can you confirm that when you access Account Settings:

'Server Settings' > 'Advanced' and set up to use : 'Inbox for different account' - 'Global Inbox (Local Folders)' that you can only see 'Local Folders' mail account in Folder Pane. OR do you still see all the pop maila ccounts and Local Folders ?

Also confirm for each pop mail account that you have set up 'Copies & Folders' and 'Junk Settings' to use the eg; 'Sent folder on Local Folders'

I can confirm that once I restart Thunderbird I see only the local folders structure I have set up. The individual accounts are no longer visible.

Also, I have set the junk, sent et al to point to the local folders as well. So basically, nothing should be stored in the individual accounts.

Further, I have created many rules to automatically move messages to sub-folders based on from and topic. The only stuff that would stay in the inbox is a message from someone I have never communicated with before.

I see in the status bar "Downloading 2 of 2 messages"... but then they vanish as detailed in the OP.

re :Further, I have created many rules to automatically move messages to sub-folders

As all incoming mail is set up to use the 'Local Folders' Inbox, then Message Filters would need to be set up to 'Filter for: Local Folders' mail account.

So... Via 'Menu Bar':

  • 'Tools' > 'Message Filters'

or Via 'Mail Toolbar':

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Message Filters' > 'Message Filters'

Filters For: select 'Local Folders' click on 'New' Give filter a suitable name create the filter conditions and actions click on OK enable filter

Note: Filters work in the order listed. click on OK

Can you confirm that all of the Message Filters are configured to Filter for 'Local Folders' and not the individual pop mail accounts?

Yes, I confirm that all message filters exist ONLY for the local folders. There are no filters on any other account.

Currently as I am not using the local folders feature (because emails vanish), I'm manually moving messages around, so even though the filters exist on local folders they are not being executed.
