How do I import from OE as new mail accounts and NOT as subfolders

I am trying to import 2 email accounts from Outlook Express, when I do so I end up with the accounts as sub folders of "Local Folders" like this:-

-Local Folders

 -- Imported Mail 1
 -- Imported Mail 2

What I want is new parent folders like this (the same as when a new account is created):-

-Local Folders -Imported Mail 1 -Imported Mail 2

I am unable to drag the new accounts up to make them new parent folders, I have tried everything I can think of, it looks like I will have to create a new account. Is there any way (even by manually editing a settings file) to arrange the imported accounts this way?

You didn't import accounts. You just did import mail from accounts you created in OE.

You'll need to set up the accounts which did exist in OE also in Thunderbird. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/automatic-account-configuration

Once the accounts have been set up in Thunderbird you can change the order in which they are shown in the folder pane using this add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/manually-sort-folders/

Note, if your accounts are POP, make sure not to select Global Inbox in the set up process. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Global_Inbox
