Can't permanently remove Lightning - it keeps coming back

more options

Each time I start Thunderbird, I get a message telling me that Lightning 5.5b1 is not compatible with the curect version of Thunderbird and will be disabled. I have removed Lightning via the Add-ons menu many times but it comes back again. Using Thundrbird version 54.0b3 (32 bit). The system is 64 bit but I can't see that being a problem.
