my messages are arriving as if open without me clicking on them, which makes it challenging to figure out what are new messages and what have already been opene
In my Inbox, all the messages appear as if they have been opened. Up until yesterday, all of my new messages appeared in bold face type, so I could tell at a glance what were new and what were old messages. Suddenly none of my messages are in bold. How do I fix this?

Can I ask you to try something? Switch to View|Folders|Unread and see if it shows you unread messages. I wonder if it's simply a cosmetic thing and Thunderbird knows that they are unread, or if they are genuinely arriving as if already read.
Are you using any other clients or devices to work this account?
I don't know if Thunderbird thinks they have been read or not. Ordinarily, message that have not been read remain in bold text until they are read. They are all coming in "not bolded", so it is hard at a glance to see what is new and old. I tried what you said, and it didn't change the situation.

How about you do what Zeno asked. Progress can not be made unless you try the actions suggested.
