How do I get rid of about.newtab from my Firefox?

Suddenly, once Firefox is up and running, when I try to navigate via tabs to websites, "about.newtab" appears to take control of the navigation process. I do not want anything to do with anything "about.newtab or "about.com" working in my browser. How do I get this thing out of Firefox entirely? Thank you. HM

Note that it is accidentally about:newtab with a colon (about: is a protocol). This is the default new tab page. If you want to set another page as the new tab page then look at this extension.
