How do I stop a page that's loading but experiencing some kind of problem? Firefox displays an "X" icon in the upper lefthand of the window that seems like it's supposed to do this. However, clicking it once doesn't stop the page loading, clicking it twice doesn't stop the page loading, clicking it ten times doesn't stop the page loading, etc. Is there an alternative like a keyboard shortcut I can use instead of the functionally broken X button?

Hello gohanman37! You can press the escape key to cancel loading the page like the X button is supposed to do. Hope this helps! If it does, please mark this post as solved!

Is this problem with many websites, some, a few?

If the Stop (X) button on the Navigation Toolbar isn't working then there might be a script running that uses to much CPU time.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
