Hmm, normally bookmarks are displayed in

• menu
• sidebar
• toolbar
• separate Library window

and not in a tab. So what page are you using?

I have used Firefox since v. 50 to load an existing bookmark.htm from my hard drive upon startup. Namely, file:///C:/Mine/Testing/BOOKMARK.HTM. Never had a problem upto v. 74.

Hope the jpg explains how the bookmark.htm is my home page upon starting up Firefox.

Hmm, usually Firefox uses a "back-forward cache" to keep track of position in a page. If the page is reloading from the top, perhaps there is a problem with the cache? Is the problem limited to this local file -- if you have a long page of search results, for example, does Firefox remember the scroll position on that?

Cleared cache, history etc., and opened another larger htm file, scrolled down about midpoint and opened a website. Left top arrow clicked and was taken to the top of the htm page instead of mid point.

I know v. 74 was working fine prior to updating to v. 75 and then 76. Since I have a backup image of my C drive with v. 74 installed, I was thinking of copying its files and overwriting the current v. 76. But I don't know what directories or files I would have to copy and over write in v. 76.

Any one know?

I don't think this is due to a change in Firefox, although it's difficult to know because each version has so many changes. Could you try this:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your problem page(s).

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like May2020, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.

Do the problem pages(s) work normally in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (May2020 will remain available for future testing.)

Note: if this test changed your default profile, use the Set as Default Profile button for your regular profile to set it back to normal.

Tried your suggestion and the new browser still returns to the top of the page after clicking the left arrow button.

Just for the heck, tried the same bookmark in the latest Opera and it does return to the original location on the page after clicking the left arrow button.

Well, couldn't stay with Opera after using Firefox for so many years. So I downloaded v.74.0.1 and reinstalled over v.76.

Sure enough, my startup bookmark page works GREAT! Scroll down to mid page of the bookmark and select a website, click on it and view it. Click on the upper left corner return arrow and the bookmark location is returned to its original location.

Allowed an update to v. 75 and the problem with the bookmark page returned. Allowed an update to v. 76 and had the same problem.

So, going back to v. 74.0.1 which works for me.

HOPE, the coders fix this error soon in the next version past v. 76.

It took me a while to think of a long document I store locally. I had the problem on a couple links, then I experimented. If I scroll down and use Ctrl+r to reload the page (the second bypasses the cache), then when I go back to the page it no longer goes up to the top. Instead, it returns to the position where I pressed Ctrl+r. So Firefox is not automatically caching the vertical scroll position with the file:// URL the way it does with http:// and https:// URLs.

There's a tool called mozregression that lets you enter the last working release and the first non-working release and it downloads various intermediary versions and you test and report whether the problem is or isn't found in that version. Eventually, after many downloads that take quite a long time, you usually can get to an answer...

There was a change related to http:/https: links in a file:// page,. but I didn't understand the change well enough to think of a workaround. So I filed a new bug:

Yes it has been resolved...... Thank you very much.

Gave up earlier trying to log in to this board with FF 77.01. Even after many tries with different six digit codes received it failed as account NOT activated. Finally used Opera and for some reason I was able to login just now.
