I want to associate Thunderbird Calendar with iCal or Google Calendar files so that when I, for example, book an appointment online and it offers those files to update my calendar, it will correctly populate Thunderbird? I'm not sure if either of those is compatible with Thunderbird.

Chosen solution

After you add the Google calendar, check its Properties (right-click the calendar in left pane of Calendar tab) so that the Email is the gmail account that receives the invitations. When you accept an invitation, it should be added to the Google calendar.

Google calendars can be added to TB as CalDAV calendars:

I'm not sure if that will result in clicking on a calendar link provided by an appointment to automatically populate TB Calendar. Perhaps someone will explain in simple terms for this TB newbie how to make that happen.
