SMTP server need multiple user logon due IONOS security change (emails must logon using email domain), I have several domains. IONOS on 29/01/2024 require emails sent via SMTP to be from the domain of the email. eg 111.com, 222.com & 333.com I have three domains with ionos so I need to be able to logon using three different users. eg fred@111.com, bert@222.com & jim@333.com all to SMTP.ionos.co.uk BUT Thunderbird appears to only allow ONE USER for each SMTP server. Attempting to change user changes ALL instances of logon to smtp.ionos.com. "Action Required: Update Your Email Settings By 28.01.2024

Dear XXXXXXX,

This is a reminder of our email from November 2023.

We are making the following changes on our email servers starting on 29.01.2024, to increase security for our customers: • • It will only be possible to send emails through our servers if the sender address has the same domain as the corresponding mailbox.

You can find more detailed information on the actions you need to take in our Help Centre.

If you have already made these changes for the affected mailboxes, you do not need to do anything else.

What does this mean for you?

For these mailboxes, you will need to necessary to adjust the settings of your email program or the software that sends the emails by 28.01.2024:

aaa@yyy.org.uk [this is the default user]

You can find detailed information and a step-by-step guide on how you can make these changes in our Help Centre.

Please make sure that the domain of the sender address and the authentication address in the outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings of the software you are using match by 28.01.2024, at the latest.

If that is not the case, affected emails will no longer be delivered from 29.01.2024, displaying an error message “Sender address is not allowed” and they won't be sent.

Please be aware that this rule applies to all platforms, including mobile email apps, Outlook, other desktop email clients, personal email servers, and any applications that use our SMTP service for sending emails.

If necessary, please forward this email to the users of the mailboxes or the person responsible for your email administration.

Best regards,

IONOS Customer Service"

When you change an SMTP server and then it appears to change all SMTP servers, that is an indication that you are using one server for all accounts. Each account needs its own SMTP server. They may be identical except for the email address. I encourage also placing the email address in the Description field for the SMTP server settings to simplify the process of linking the account to the associated SMTP server.

I tried that, but it failed. I simply found that all the server "description" changed to the new email address and password rather than just the one I changed. That is that within Thunderbird the server smtp.ionos.co.uk only seemed to accept one user. Now, it may be that the problem is the accounts already exist, but obviously I do not want to lose all my past emails by closing the old accounts and opening a new one. What is needed is to add a new server in a standalone entry (I cannot find anywhere to do that). That way I could add the" three" servers, with different descriptors, logon user (ie domain) add & password, but the same server address and point the other email addresses (keeping domains matched) to the appropriate one. If its possible, any chance of a step-by-step if this can be done?

- click to account settings pane - scroll down left side, past the account name to 'Outgoing Servers SMTP' and click that. It will show all SMTP servers. From there, you can click 'add' and create new SMTP servers. Be sure to enter exactly the same info as on the one that works, except for email address. Enter that also in description field for documentation. - once you have created the SMTP severs, click each account pane and the bottom line is where you specify the appropriate SMTP server.

Thats what I needed. No other descriptions suggestes scrolling on LHS past the account names etc etc etc. Not a totally obvious place to look when its also shown (but cannot be added to) in individual accounts. Might be nice to have a link/connection from the entry in the individual accounts to enter a new server. I will try this on the weekend.
