Can't unthread emails

I want my emails to be listed with the latest up top, and then chronologically. I have selected countless times "unthread emails" but it's not listing mails separately in chronological order. It's especially frustrating as I want Firebird to be a viable alternative.

if unthreaded, in message list pane, in table view, click the 'date' word on top line to have message list sorted.
