After downloading 8.0 I got a message I wasn't safe and this was incompatable with my AVG 9.0. I also got a message AVG was disconnected or something to that effect. Has firefox disconnected my virus software?
Is my computer still safe to use with AVG 9.0 if I don't use Firefox and use another browser. If firefox is not compatable with all versions of virus software this is a huge issue to the consumer.

No, Firefox doesn't disable your anti-virus software. Firefox does disable the silly little add-ons that AVG (and other AV applications) install as Firefox add-ons, because those add-ons are out of date for the new version of Firefox.
These AV vendors need to work on getting their Firefox add-ons to automatically update when Firefox is updated, just like the 10's of thousands of add-0ns hosted by Mozilla automatically update as part of the Firefox update procedure.
See AVG support for details about what you need to do. Might be that a Live Update to get the update or maybe a patch needs to be installed.
