Ever since i upgraded from ff 3.6 to 3.6.24, i get this error message every time i open firefox: ff cannot install the update. please make sure another version is not already running." then i click ok and the window opens to the home page. i do have 3.6.25 now, so the updates must be working despite this error message.

The larger question for myself and probably others on older computers is this:

If security for firefox 3.6 is being discontinued in the 1st quarter of this year, where does that leave us? We can't all afford new computers with the right speed of pentium processors. I have an old computer with an intel processor. Will I and others with intel or lower number pentium processors be unable to continue using firefox? I would gladly buy some memory, but the processor issue I cannot fix.

i understand that things move with the times, and that the new improved versions are bigger and better. Still, I ask the FF team to please consider those of us who can't afford buying new computers, or keep up with the CPU loads from the latest versions.

Won't the ff team please continue security for older versions, or come up with something smaller and lighter on resources for us? This upgrade is going to leave a lot of people behind who would rather stick with FF. I'll have to use chrome or opera, which is OK i guess, but FF has been my default browser for many years. I hate the thought of losing FF; it's been the best for years!

If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.

You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml (stores the update history).

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

hi corel; thanks for your reply. your instructions are excellent and helpful, and i would follow them if ff 3 would be something that won't be obsolete very soon.

my question is posed for the larger problem: i have an intel processor and a very old computer, so can't download anything beyond ff3, because nothing else is compatible. the security updates for ff 3 are about to expire, and i don't want to have to lose firefox. that is why i posed the question/plea as i did. i'm probably not the only one who can't afford a newer computer to solve this.

the error message is annoying, but it took me two days to even get ff to behave that well after the last install that went wonky, (i think you helped me with that one too), and apparently the updates are happening, since i downloaded ff 3.24 and now have 3.25 - so i can live with that inconvenience, for now.

my larger concern is that firefox soon won't be available to me and others in my position, and i wonder if the team has any advice or is willing to do anything about it. if not, then i am sorry to lose ff and will be back if i get a computer with the necessary compatibility requirements.

i don't know where else to address my concerns about this- to whom on the ff team. if you know of a link where i should be writing these concerns/questions i would be glad to have it. thanks.

Your computer is fast enough with a 3.33 GHz processor.
The only problem is the amount of RAM (368 MB), so maybe try to get an extra 512 MB RAM and it shouldn't be a problem to run current Firefox releases.
Having a sufficient amount of physical RAM is more important than the processor speed.

corel; thank you for this information. am i to understand that by simply buying more RAM i can use firefox 10? that would be good news! in ff 8, it was recommended that you have a pentium processor 4 or later. i have an intel. if the answer is just more RAM, i can easily do this. if this solves the dilemma, i can mark this question solved; let me know, and thank you!
