Please I need someone from Mozilla to contact me regarding this issue.

On the Tools, then Options tab, under Show Update History, Use A Background Service To Install Updates, so now I can't check this box to not allow the service to install updates.

I just updated from 15.0.1 and the above option was there, now that I have upgraded to 16.0.1 it is gone.

Mozilla updated correctly on my laptop and husband computer but not mine, so what do I do?

Did I get a corrupted version of Mozilla Firefox? Do I uninstall Mozilla Firefox and re-install it again?

Thank you.

Your screenshot shows that service as being installed and available.

Is that screenshot from your computer or from another computer?

Do you have the "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Maintenance Service" folder with the maintenanceservice.exe program in it?

If that service isn't installed properly then you need tr run the installer program to reinstall that service.

I'm not sure I understand the problem.

I can't check this box to not allow the service to install updates.

You want to check the box or uncheck the box? Is it grayed out? Ignores your clicks?

Sorry about my question.

Okay, the Use A Background Service to Install Updates box is completely missing, so therefore I can't check it or uncheck it.

So do what do I do please.

Hi - Grandma here - I do a lot of work on tough kids and tough computer problems and you showed up as UNSOLVED so lets fix this - step-by-step - ok?

First, lets agree on the OBJECTIVES. I always work from this list.

The primary problem is you are able to install updates on a few PCs, but one PC won't do it so lets see if we can identify differences in the PCs - i.e. operating systems, firewalls or other software that may be BLOCKING upgrades. If I am incorrect and you have some OTHER objective, please let me know. Thank you.

So to start - please tell me:

a) WHAT IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM of the PCs that the updates worked on and WHAT IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM of the PC that won't do the upgrade? It appears the PC that WILL NOT update is running Window XP. Is that correct?

When I get the answer to that we will continue...ok?

That background service program may not be installed.

Do you have a maintenanceservice_installer.exe program in the Firefox program folder?

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ (64 bit Windows)

Okay, here we go. I am sending you a copy of the Options Tab. On the Advanced Tab under Show Update History, there is a box, Use a background service to install updates, for some reason or another this didn't install with the 16.0.1 update.

I have windows XP Professional, service pack 3 on both of our desktop computers, and we have Kaspersky Internet Security 12 onboard.

Now on my husband computer & my laptop the 16.0.1 installed with no issues, and it did on mine, but this one component is missing.

So I wondering if I received a corrupted 16.0.1 and should uninstall and re-install?

Please advise.

cor-el, I do see the file on my computer, maintenanceservice.exe & maintenanceservice_installer.exe

If that service isn't installed and the "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Maintenance Service" directory is missing then run the above mentioned maintenanceservice_installer.exe program in the Firefox program folder to install that service.

cor-el, I just took another look and the Use A Background Service To Install Updates Is Back. I went into my program files and clicked on both of the files mentioned above and that may have been what was needed.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

If you run the maintenanceservice_installer.exe program then the "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Maintenance Service" is created and the maintenanceservice.exe is copied to that folder.

This Mozilla Maintenance Service program shows as an extra entry in Control Panel > Add and Remove programs.

Hi cor-el,

On this Mozilla Maintenance Service program, I did notice 2 extra entries in the Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs, they were only on my computer not my husband, so I deleted both of these files. Is this okay?

Earlier, when I clicked on the maintenance service file it created a Old Firefox Data File, I'm not sure how that happened, and is it okay to delete it or do I just leave it on my desktop?

more options

Be careful not to remove the Mozilla Maintenance Service program entry that you created by installing that service just now or you will have to repeat the installation.

You only get an Old Firefox Data folder if you create a new profile via a Firefox Reset.

A 'Reset' creates a new default profile with a time stamp appended to identify it and tries to recover settings like bookmarks and history and passwords and cookies and auto-fill data from the old profile, but you lose data like extensions and other customizations.

You can recover data from that profile if you need to and delete that folder if that is no longer the case.
