Older FF versions had an add-on so one could run an sftp:// connection (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fireftp/). But 15.0.1. and newer do not seem to be compatible with this anymore. Unfortunately one is not told about it before the upgrade.

- why is there no downward compatibility and - how can I get back to an older version to make sftp work?

First, you should update to Firefox 19, running old versions is a serious security risk.

Then, install FireFTP 2.0.7, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fireftp/versions/?page=1#version-2.0.7, which apparently works just fine.
