My web page uses svg images, but when the svg's are printed by Firefox they are rasterized at the wrong resolution.

I have produced a web page which uses svg images. One of these is here: http://donwagner.dk/JZSS5.4.svg.

The svg's are produced by Adobe Illustrator, version CS5. Viewed in any browser the images look good at any magnification, but when I print the page in Firefox the image is seriously blurred, seemingly because the rasterization uses the wrong resolution.

The same happens in all browsers, not quite so bad in Chrome but still not perfect.

Do you have plans to fix this bug, or do you have a workaround?

Update to Firefox 20.0.1 and give a try...


Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Hello -

I tried the "Safe mode", and it made no difference.

I I am using Firefox 20.0 on Mac under OS 10.7.5. I can't find 20.0.1 anywhere.

Below are links to an svg file and a pdf done with the Print dialogue in Firefox - the print on paper looks exactly the same. Try printing the svg file yourself.

As I said, the same problem turns up in almost all browsers - the only exception I have found being iCab.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

In my experience, print quality settings such as dpi/ppi are hidden in your printer driver settings and not directly available through Firefox's UI. In the print dialog, if you click the Properties button, you hopefully will gain access to this setting. Obviously native web resolution (96ppi) can give disappointing results, so hopefully you can find a place to increase it.

Hi Don, there are 3 possible sources for updated graphics drivers:

  • Computer manufacturer (e.g., Dell, HP) - these usually are released later than the component supplier, after a bit more testing, and may be integrated with a maintenance tool supplied by your manufacturer
  • Graphics card or chipset component supplier (e.g., AMD, Nvidia) - these will be the most cutting edge, but may not be as thoroughly tested with any given system
  • Windows update as optional updates - I don't recommend this source unless all others fail; these often run well behind the other two

Thanks, jscher2000, for responding, but I think you and iamjayakumars are talking about two different things.

I use a Mac, and I am pretty sure the software is up to date.

Anyway, resetting Firefox completely solved the problem. Mysteriously, after the reset of Firefox, the other browsers also started printing correctly.
