Hi Everyone

I’m running Window 7 on an i7-3770 with 16GB RAM.

Firefox 20.0.1

Shockwave Flash11.7.700.169

My problem is about memory usage when viewing flash content in Firefox. With one Youtube video running, Working Set Memory for the Flashplayer plugin in Windows Task Manager is pretty stable at around 100K.

PHYSICAL memory, however, which is given at the bottom of the Task Manager window, steadily increases, and after watching videos for two hours has risen to 70%-80%, causing Windows to slow down greatly.

After shutting down the plugin in Task manager ( which often takes a minute or more) physical memory goes back down to around 17% and the computer becomes usable again.

Any idea what’s going on here? Is this a problem with Flash, FF, Windows 7 or something else?

Thanks

Simon

As far as I as think, the problem might be caused by both FF and Windows 7. Can you give the processor speed ? That might help to pin-point the problem.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

@ kmrupam: 3.40Ghz

@ cor-el disabling hardware acceleration didn't help unfortunately.

Then I presume that the problem is with the flash player. Re-install it and see if that helps.

I was advised by someone on Adobe's Flashplayer forum to try running flash content with protected mode disabled; this seems to have solved my memory problem.

I'm still waiting to hear back from them whether there are any security concerns with having protected mode disabled.

I have the same problem running Firefox 18.0.2 on Kubuntu 12.04.2. Full-screen Flash will use more and more memory.

My PC is:

AMD Phenom 2 3.0 GHz, 8 GB DDR2 RAM, Nvidia GTX-460 graphics card.

Further to my earlier post, the tip by cor-el to disable hardware acceleration has fixed this.

Thanks! :-)
