I tried to change the new page tab to disable the thumbnail but the about config has blocked it-PLS HELP!!!!

I did a "refresh" of FF. The biggest mistake of my computer life. It destroyed everything I had prior. Too busy following directions to read the print alerting that it will restore it to the default status. Hard lesson learned. Now when I open a new tab it brings up thumbnails. I hate thumbnails. Just as frustrating is trying to read the lingo in the answers which also have not resolved the problem. Why do software programmers constantly change what has worked?! Unbelievably frustrating. Went into about:config "newtabpage" but it was blocked. Ducky. I am the Admin. Please if no one can help me, I will need to change to IE. After putting in 4 hours trying to recover what I lost, I am fried. Thanks to anyone who can help.
