I have eMail waiting in the Outbox folder. I open the File menu. "Send unsent messages" is greyed out. I think this has been happening for about a week. I tried restarting Thunderbird. I am using version 115.10.1 (32-bit).

I could send email by moving my messages to the Draft folder, opening each one, and choosing File -> Send Now. But when I tried just now, "Send Now" was greyed out.

Thank you, Bob

The problem seems to be that I was offline. I didn't think of that because I had no trouble retrieving email. But I saw a post in one of these forums about the online/offline icon in the lower left corner of the Thunderbird UI. I found it and tried toggling it online and offline without any noticeable effect (I still couldn't send email). But toggling it to online and then restarting Thunderbird seemed to fix the problem.

The icon looks to me like a dot surrounded by two pairs of parentheses: ((.)).
