Why am I unable to update my Firefox 3.0 when the pop-up menu tells me that the download was complete?

I am repeatedly told to upgrade my version of Firefox. Each time I attempt this, whether I disable my anti-virus software (AVG) or not, I get a pop-up menu telling me the download was completed but I still seem to be on the 3.0 version.
