where does thunderbird put my email files so I can back them up?

I recently lost a lot of my emails files when a computer crashed. I want to make sure my system is backing up the correct Thunderbird files so I can recover them if the computer goes down. I can do the back-up but would like to learn which file and format the emails themselves are stored.
