When I change default font, Tbird still uses Helvetica/Arial.
In "Account settings" I have set my default font for composing messages to "Bookman Old Style"; yet when I compose a message, Thunderbird still automatically uses Helvetica/Arial. I can change it manually in each message, but I want all my messages to use Bookman Old Style automatically. How do I make Thunderbird do that?

Did you change the setting in display or composition. There are two entries.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I've changed both settings and neither seems to make any difference, either in displaying received messages or in composing messages.
ok this is probably not it, but chack anyway.
View menu (alt+V) > message body as > original HTML. next Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > Composition and addressing and check that compose in HTML is set (note it is a per account setting)
Both settings are as you advise.
Matt, I found your answers in this thread quite helpful. Now I have a related question: I set my font size quite large as my eyesight is poor. It works when I create the outgoing email. But incoming mail font is too small. Please show me how to find the option to increase it.

The default font used when you compose HTML emails is set here: Tools|Options|Composition|General→HTML The fonts used to display messages on your screen are set here: Tools|Options|Display|Formatting→Advanced …and note that these two settings don't necessarily have to agree! You may well compose in Times Roman and yet view your messages in Arial.
That's the same advice as Matt gave me above—there are two settings. I appreciate it, but it doesn't make any difference. I've set both composition and display to Bookman Old Style, but I still get Helvetica/Arial when I write a message.
Was there something else on that page that I missed?
Are you using a signature?
