We have acquired a new computer and are locked out of our email account because its asking for a password. We have never used a password before and don't know what it is. How do we find out what it is so we can get to our email?

What does it say, exactly?
In the context of email, there are two candidates. Your email account will most definitely have a password. You must work with your email provider to reset or change it.
Thunderbird can, optionally, store account passwords and secure them with a Master Password.
The wording of the password prompt will tell us which of these two it is asking for.
A further possibility is that your operating system is asking for a password.
