Has the Help/About page changed?
When clicking on the Help/About Firefox link on Firefox, 41.0.1, the popup shows the correct version number but not whether the version is up-to-date. Clicking on the link: https://mozilla.org/firefox notes that I'm up-to-date. On the other hand, occasionally I am getting a pop up message that says something like my computer doesn't have permission to update firefox.
I also have Firefox on my Nexus 7 and I think it's set up to do some kink of syncing of URLs, etc. Might that be what's causing this strange behavior, at least strange compared to my previous experiences.
What's going on?

Did you check the update settings in "Options/Preferences > Advanced > Update"
If updates are blocked then also check the settings in your security software and make sure to allow the updater.ex program.
