Thunderbird is not keeping deleted messages in trash. Deleting them
Messages sent to trash are only available for recall for a few weeks, then are deleted. How do I fix this?

Are you using an IMAP-account and have your trash on server? In that case check your servers settings thru webmail. If you have it local then check Tools / account settings / 'your account name' / sync... & storage / disk space. Also check your trash-folders quota and retention. (right-click on folder / properties)
