Hi, I have been searching through the internet for a resolution, but each mention of an add-on or such for firefox leads to no-longer working pages it seems.

When I visit a website that has,for example, a list of 12 tips on a subject, (like 12 ways to annoy your cat ;)), it might show he first one, then i am supposed to click the forward arrow to see the next tip. However, i often find that it will not advance, unless i first refresh the page, then re-click the arrow, every single timei want to advance!

Is there a fix for this, or a good, updated add-on to auto-refresh?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, if it works in Safe Mode then usually either an extension or theme or hardware acceleration is the cause of the problem. You need to continue the troubleshooting in normal mode and try to isolate the actual culprit. Switching to the default theme is fairly easy and doesn't involve much changes like other steps might do. We usually try easy things first and keep things that have more impact or take more effort for later unless the cause looks clear.

In your case an extension is a more likely cause.

If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem. Continue to divide the bad half that still has the issue until you find which one is causing it.

Hi Fred, thanks so much for your guidance. I am already stuck on the plugin one, because the only plug-in i have outdated is that pesky java:

Java Runtime Environment Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.3.0 for Mozilla browsers outdated 7.0.03.

This is one i've tried every so often to update, as firefox keeps telling me it should be, but every time, it won't allow me to. It's known to be vulnerable and all that.

So, should i just call the plugins good and move on to your next suggestions?

ALSO, as per your: " Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now. ",

is that the same as doing the: "history: clear recent history:" checking CACHE, and hitting CLEAR NOW? (that's how i just did it, then read your note to do it this way below...)

but Java Runtime Environment Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.3.0 for Mozilla browsers outdated 7.0.03 (that i mentioned above) IS java, not javascript!

in fact, javascript isn't even included in my lists in add-ons manager anyway.

So, do you know why firefox won't let me update the java from add-ons manager? -- even though it tells me i should?

i wanted to provide screen shots here to show you, but alas, i cannot get my PrtSc button to work...arggh. ..

So instead, i will have to retype the info here:

1.

from add-ons manager:

"Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U3 is known to be vulnerable and should be updated." with link after it that says, "Update Now". 2. from where that link takes me: https://blocklist.addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/p182 it says: "Java Plugin 7 update 11 and lower (click-to-play), Windows has been blocked for your protection. Why was it blocked?

The Java plugin is causing significant security problems. All users are strongly

recommended to keep the plugin disabled unless necessary. Who is affected?

All users who have these versions of the plugin installed in Firefox 17 and above.

What does this mean?

The problematic add-on or plugin will be automatically disabled and no longer

usable.

When Mozilla becomes aware of add-ons, plugins, or other third-party software

that seriously compromises Firefox security, stability, or performance and meets certain criteria, the software may be blocked from general use. For more information, please read this support article. Blocked on October 30, 2012. View block request."

So, I have gotten to this same dead end many times over the past few years, and going to the "please read this support article" pages and reading everything did not explain how to resolve it, only why it was not desirable.

Is this simply a bug in firefox, for which you are now providing me a work-around?

Thanks!

also, i have repeatedly tried to use the link you provided, as this hopefully potential work-around, but alas, each time it crashes, and/or says "unresponsive script." any idea why? thanks again!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

thanks- i will try it, and post back my results :)

but first i should clarify-- you say to start in safe mode, but then to Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance.

Yet, according to the safe mode help page, safe mode temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, AND disables add-ons. Isn't disabling add-ons already switching to the DEFAULT theme? Are you telling me to do both safe mode and THEN after restarting FF switch to default? Or are you simply re-explaining anpther way to do safe mode?...

That is about restarting Firefox in normal mode once you have confirmed that Safe Mode works. Switching to the default theme nay not always be necessary, but it is always good practice to follow some standard steps in case you ever run into a problem with a custom theme.

more options

hmmm, i apologize, but am still trying to understand-- are you saying that if Safe Mode works, it means i have either an add-on or hardware acceleration problem?

In which case, i should Switch to the default theme?

which will in turn keep the safe mode permanently in operation?

and, what is the difference between Switching to the DEFAULT theme and clicking the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window?

thanks!

hi, thanks again! What you explained here makes sense to me. :) Just one thing i'm still unclear on: is normal mode and "default theme" the same thing? If not, how do i know which one, and how, to choose?

Also, please remember to tell me, if you would: what is the difference between Switching to the DEFAULT theme and clicking the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window?

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs.

more options

When you use the Refresh Firefox feature then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data, tabs) is automatically imported. The current profile folder will be moved to an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

Great! Thanks so much for all your help! :)
