Does Thunderbird Version 45.0 support Lightning?
Before I install Thunderbird Version 45.0 I want to know if it supports the current version of Lightning. It would be helpful if the Software Update application would give this information rather than having to ask this kind of question each time there is a major software release (I call going from 38.7.2 to 45.0 a MAJOR upgrade). Thank you for your assistance.

Not the current version you are using now. Every major upgrade of Thunderbird has a matching new version of Lightning. It has from the beginning. Just make sure you upgrade both.
