My inbox shows a total size in the folder pane but does not list message headers in the message pane
My computer hung up and I had to do a hard restart (power off then on). When the computer restarted and Thunderbird restarted the messages in my inbox did not show up in the upper window of the message pane even though the folder pane showed the total size of the messages (but not the number of messages). New messages received display normally.

First of all create a full backup of your Thunderbird profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile
Then try to rebuild the index file of the troubled folder (i.e. Inbox). Right-click the folder - Properties - Repair Folder
