My Thunderbird account was deleted from my laptop during a reset. I re-installed it and successfullyre-installed my gmail email but was told my plusnet email was not recognised, though it had been on the previous Thunderbird account.

re :It has been suggested to me that Thunderbird no longer supports Plusnet As plusnet says: IMAP and POP are ways you can download your emails from Plusnet systems to another email application. then Thunderbird can be used. Thunderbird does not 'support' anything, it is an email client, a tool for accessing server and downloading emails to read etc. Plusnet would have to stop allowing pop and imap, not the other way around.

If you used 'Menu icon' > 'New Message' > 'Existing mail account' and TB attempted to get settings: click on the 'Manual Config' button

Post image of this window so we can see what server settings are being used.

If you have created the mail account anyway, even if it does not work: Post this info: In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information clickon 'Copy text to clipboard' b utton In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and elect 'Paste'. Edit/ Remove all info on fonts and printers but nothing else.

'Menu icon' > 'New Message' > 'Existing mail account'

  • Enter name
  • Enter email address
  • enter password (same one you use to access webmail account)
  • Select checkbox to remember password
  • click on 'Continue'

Thunderbird will attempt to locate settings.

Make sure the correct type of account is selected eg: POP or IMAP

You can click on 'Manual Config' button to see full details and edit as required.

Full details on plusnet website: https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/ select the option 'What other settings do I need' to see server settings for email client.

Thanks, but that is exactly what I have been doing and I get the message that Thunderbird does not recognize the account. Have been in touch with Plusnet and my password is ok. Any other suggestions welcome.

What exactly is TB using for the server settings? Note that Plusnet accounts use no connection security, whereas TB might assume STARTTLS security on ports 143 (incoming IMAP), and 587 (outgoing SMTP).

There is also a difference in the User name if you're adding an extra email address.

Thank you for your suggestion but I do not understand what you are telling me. All I know is that I filled up the spaces on the menu exactly as a former correspondent required but this did not work. It has been suggested to me that Thunderbird no longer supports Plusnet but I do not know if this is true or not.

I'm suggesting that when you add the account to TB, starting from File/New/Existing Mail Account, the setup wizard searches for appropriate settings, but possibly doesn't find the correct ones. In that case, you have to enter the settings manually. If you have already added the account, open Tools/Account Settings and report what you have for the Plusnet account's Server Settings, i.e. server name, port, connection security, authentication.
