after opening Thunderbird & getting emails, then leaving screen for 15-20 minutes, when opening new messages-blank screen comes up [Mac]

when reading emails, if I leave screen for 15-20 minutes, then return to get new mail and open them, the mail message screen is blank. So I have to quit Thunderbird, and relaunch in order to read new mail. Also, Address book comes up blank until I relaunch program.
