Emptied trash, it deleted my entire inbox. How can I retrieve?

New disputer, hard drive on the old is crashing. Imported my messages from the old disputer, no problem. All in the inbox as I expected. Dragged in new e-mail, no problem. Culled out a bunch of old e-mails to thin the herd. Emptied trash, *EVERYTHING* in the inbox is gone, dating back to 2010. I can retrieve through September 22nd from the old disputer, but there was newer stuff that is vital and gone. Apparently it synced with my online mailbox also (never did that with the old disputer), as it is all gone there too. What can I do to retrieve stuff that I can't find anywhere now?

Sounds like old computer used a pop mail account. But new computer is using an imap mail account. Is that correct?
