How can I view the bookmarks/library in the browser pane, rather than a toolbar on the side? I can't read the small print, my folders aren't visible, and a miss-click collapses the entire menu.

I want it to open like the "settings" menu, where it is in the browser pane like any regular website.

You can open bookmarks in a tab using the url below. You can bookmark that. Evidently you should close it before editing / adding / deleting bookmarks.

chrome://browser/content/places/places.xhtml

Note that using the above posted chrome:// URI might not work properly like when you make changes.

Does the Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B) work for you ?

You can drag the Bookmarks Menu button that shows the bookmarks in a drop-down list from the Customize palette to the Navigation Toolbar. This Bookmarks Menu button has a "View bookmarks sidebar" menu item.

See "How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?"
