If I go to a website it creates a shortcut on my browser page each time. I only want to have the pages I use a lot on there. Is there some way of stopping each site from being added?

It sounds like your default "Firefox Home" page. You have options as you can change the Homepage or you can customize the Firefox Home to not show shortcuts of sites you save or visit.
