I followed the article "Switch from POP to IMAP account" successfully. But I am left with two problems: 1. Whenever I try to send an email I get the error message "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.lcn.com timed out. Try again." I have to use webmail or my mobile phone to do so. 2. After I switched, Thunderbird created a new folder for incoming emails with the title of my email address. I already had a default folder using my account name, so I copied all the new emails to that and deleted the new one. I then went to Server Settings and changed the User Name to my Account name, which it was previously. However, my incoming emails now do not appear at all, I can only see them on my phone or webmail. I have checked my settings over & over but I cannot see anything wrong. I would include some screenshots but the print screen button on this temporary keyboard doesn't seem to work properly. (I am in the process of transferring all my work to a new PC running Windows 11.)

From your post, it seems Thunderbird was doing it right, as the account defaults to the email address unless renamed.Yes, screenshots will help.

3 identical images.

The account displaying is a Pop mail account based on info shown in left pane. However, you have not posted the 'Server Settings' nor the SMTP ougoing server settings for the account.

You cannot set up a Pop account and just swap it's server settings to use the same as an imap account nor vis versa.

Pop accounts and Imap accounts must be created as separate accounts. They look virtually the same but use different port numbers. However, ehy get set up with a different structure etc and are stored in different locations in the profile.

IMAP Settings Incoming

  • Mail Server: mail.lcn.com
  • Port: 993
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • Username: yourname@yourdomain.com
  • Password: your mailbox password

POP Settings Incoming

  • Mail Server: mail.lcn.com
  • Port: 995
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • Username: yourname@yourdomain.com
  • Password: your mailbox password

Outgoing (SMTP)

  • SMTP server name: mail.lcn.com
  • Port: 465
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • Username: yourname@yourdomain.com
  • Password: your mailbox password

Please Note: You must activate SMTP before you can use SMTP to send from your device or application. You can find out how to do this here.

Pop accounts access server Inbox only and download whatever is in the server Inbox tha has not been previously downloaded. Pop accounts store all emails on your computer in your profile folders. Pop account fodlers do not synchronise with any folder on the server, so can be regarded as a completely independent of server.

Imap accounts synchronise all imap folders with server folders so they can only display whatever is on the server. Because they synchronise with server, you cannot regard them as independent copies on your computer. But you can use them to create a backup which would be independent of server. Anything you delete or move etc via an imap account will also be done on the server. This means you can use imap on phone or access webmail and see same as in Thunderbird imap account. But please remember anything you delete via another imap account or via webmail will delete from the imap account in Thunderbird. They are in effect all the same - just showing whatever is on server.

I followed the instructions given to me first by LCN and then the article "Switch from POP to IMAP account" here, so if it's not worked properly the instructions must be at fault. Not sure what happened with the screenshots, it's the first time I've used SNIP & GIMP to post them. Will have another look tomorrow.
