I've read several posts on similar problems. I first experienced the freeze-up when trying to download files. So, I tried to go into tools/options as instructed to change download location. I then got the same freeze up at that point (when I clicked on "options") and had to end FF using task manager. I tried Safe Mode with add-on's disabled, and then I tried re-installing FF, same result each time. There must be some corrupt dll or ini or similar file in my profile somewhere that is causing this, and I don't want to start over with a new profile, obviously. Any help appreciated

Delete downloads.sqlite (plus downloads.rdf, if it exists) in the Profile Folder

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_save_or_download_files#Manually_delete_download_history --- You can also try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the Safe mode start window See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_preferences
