In Firefox 4, I can't seem to set the preferences to display icons for navigation buttons but text for the toolbar to conserve space, like in the old Firefox.

Am trying to get rid of annoying icons in the toolbar without having to revert to text such as "BACK" in the navigation area.

A Mac user has created an add-on to remove the icons from the bookmarks toolbar, the Bookmarks Deiconizer - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/bookmarks-deiconizer
