I think I managed to fix this. Go to your sync account, log in, and click clear your sync data. Then click the Sync now button on the error message.

The error went away for me.

I've been getting this error too after upgrading both my desktop and netbook to FF 5. I did at first wonder whether it was because I still had the unnecessary add-on of Sync 1.7 in my add-ons so I uninstalled it at both ends.

Still I get the 'unknown error' message. Curiously Sync does actually appear to work despite the error message as I added a new bookmark to one machine, booted up the other and it appeared there too!

Maybe the error message is an error!

This just started after the last update was installed. Mine also appears to actually be working. I logged in and checked the "sync data" and my bookmarks/passwords seem to be intact. I think it IS an "error message in error".
