My son upgraded a download for Firefox and now I can not get or install Java

My son saw a window pop up that said install firefox and a # do not know if it was a 6 or ??. He downloaded because he likes Firefox as do I. But this is not compatible with other programs like Java I can not install or get older version on laptop. An suggestions? I am not a computer expert!
