New computer, Dell XPS 17 laptop, Windows 7 64 bit, downloaded the latest Firefox (v12.0), but it will not ask to remember passwords? That is one of the big reasons to even use Firefox, is there something that needs to be set? Also bummed that Easy Windows Transfer from the old computer, which allegedly copied "everything" over, did not copy my Firefox stuff over?

Here's what I suggest:

On your old computer, open Help > Troubleshooting Information then the button that says either Open Containing Folder (pre Firefox 12) or Show Folder (Firefox 12). This is your active profile, and you should copy all of the contents of that folder to a USB flash drive or your other favorite kind of media.

On your new computer, close Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager as described in Managing profiles. Create a new blank profile. After Firefox starts up in this profile, go to Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder. Leave that window open and shut down Firefox.

Now completely clear that new profile folder and dump everything from your old profile folder into it. Restart Firefox and you should have as close a replica as possible to your old configuration.

Any luck?

Did you verify that Firefox is set to remember passwords?

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Remember passwords for sites"

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Try to disable hardware acceleration.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Wow, Firefox is standing on my last nerve. I tried to login to this site to respond, but had to do it from my OLD computer cuz Firefox on my NEW computer (where I having problems with it) said "you do not have permission to access this page" when trying to login, but logged in here from my old computer just fine.

Yes, set to remember passwords. (For what's worth, it still doesn't). No, not in private browsing mode.

This is a brand new installation on a brand new computer, so as of yet, I have no extensions, no addons, and using the default (and only) theme.

From the list above, the "use hardware acceleration" *IS* checked, should I try to uncheck it? Heck, it's got a 3 GB video card!

Also, Firefox is not remembering which tabs were open when I exit like the Firefox did on my old computer. (Also v12). So when I restart Firefox, I have only ONE tab open and it goes to my home page. Wonder if it's time to check out Chrome.....

You might want to try migrating your old data manually from a backup. This assumes you can get a copy of your Firefox Profiles folder from the old computer over to the new one.

I used "windows easy transfer" to transfer all the data. *SEEMS* to have worked well with most things but not with the Firefox stuff. So that said, doing a MANUAL transfer of my Firefox stuff, what files specifically do I need to retrieve from WHERE and copy them via a thumb drive to WHERE?

BTW. where is this mysterious "Firefox button" that the links keep referring to? I'm running Firefox v12.0 on Windows 7 64-bit and I see no "Firefox button" except for the one in the upper left where my options are always only restore, close, move, minimize, maximize?

If you go to View > Toolbars > Menu Bar and deselect it, you will get an orange Firefox button which drops down with an abbreviated set of menus.
